Taxology, in simple terms, means classification. Derived from bloom’s taxonomy, it is used to describe a student’s learning methodology. Its implementation in the teaching line cannot be emphasised enough. It simply states that the focus of an educator is to focus on increasing the knowledge and skills of learners. The learning outcome of teaching is that the students understand the lesson. Taxonomies are made to incorporate educational goals into everyday teaching. These educational goals help in the determination of classroom goals and assessments. Lastly, developing an education curriculum that supports students' learning is the key to effective education.

To be able to teach in an organised manner, it is beneficial to opt for child development courses. By learning taxonomies, educators can understand the different levels of teaching methodologies and inculcate them in their classes. Each level represents different steps needed to be taken while instructing students.

  • Level 1 - Remembering
This refers to having a basic understanding of the subject and defining and retaining the information.
  • Level 2 - Understanding
The second level is about having the ability to explain the learning outcome of the information through summarizing or description.
  • Level 3 - Applying
This deals with the application of knowledge gained through the demonstration of learning.
  • Level 4 - Analysing
It refers to the process of breaking down concepts into topics and smaller fragments to create a relation between the subjects.
  • Level 5 - Evaluating
This refers to the stage of reaching a judgment on an idea or course after gaining knowledge.
  • Level 6 - Creating
The final level talks about being able to put together alternative ideas and suggestions to provide better solutions.

For teachers, taxonomy is a practical guide to provide a course plan of lessons to teach students. The fundamental agenda is for students to get the maximum benefit from the course. Some of the benefits of taxonomy include building a foundation for coursework, creating a framework for assessments, and identifying achievable learning goals.

Why do Teachers Need to Learn About Taxonomies?

1. To Have a Guiding Framework

The basic requirement before starting with a subject or course is to have a framework laid down for the term. Understanding taxonomies can help in preparing a guided structure for the subject course. They offer a checklist to ensure that all the relevant topics are covered and are in alignment with the subject. With this, educators can make it easier to properly plan assessments and methodologies for lessons. This helps in creating a balance between educational content, instructions, and grading systems. By knowing what and when to prepare, teachers can focus more on the teaching part.

2. To Develop Education Coursework

The system of developing a curriculum for students can be a bit tough and time-consuming. Breaking down the course into small chapters and lessons can help in developing a proper timeline for the subject course. This helps in creating day-to-day lesson plans for classwork. With this, teachers can understand which topic or lesson plan needs much more time and assessment. Additionally, it is also beneficial for students as it's easier to retain knowledge when taught in a guided manner.

3. To Improve Students’ Cognitive Skills

One of the main goals of education is to build students’ cognitive skills. When educators inculcate taxonomies into everyday teaching, they help in students' overall development. Inculcating cognitive strategies in the classroom can help increase efficiency in students’ learning. Cognitive skills development is pivotal in developing critical-thinking skills and real-world attributes in students. Through activities based on the application of knowledge, constructing meaningful experiments and writing creatively are some of the ways to improve mental growth. At the end of the day, education aims to improve students skills and sharpen their abilities.

Conclusion

Investing in child development courses can benefit the educators with an understanding of the child's needs while growing up. The advantage of these courses is the value added to the skill set of a teacher. Being able to assess the topic, enhance teaching style and implement strategies in the classroom will polish educators' abilities. Teachers can opt for online courses on Child Development, Learning Styles and Learning Taxonomies from Suraasa. Child development theories can help teachers understand better about the students’ cognitive skills.
