Applying for the leadership licence

Mahmooda was coordinating a school phase where no one had yet passed the teaching licence exam. She cleared the pedagogy test on her first attempt, the first in her school to do so, then ran workshops that lifted classroom participation and attendance.

One target going in.

Mahmooda Naseem enrolled in PgCTL with the pedagogy test for the teaching licence in mind. She was still pursuing the programme when the result came through, and she calls it her biggest achievement from the course. In her video she presents the result itself: “Here is my result.” The programme also met a target set at work. Her appraisal carried an objective to attain a professional qualification. “I am doing that in the form of PgCTL,” she says.

Workshops for phase 4.

As section coordinator of phase 4, she passed on what she was learning to her staff, and the teachers put it to use. “We saw many positive impacts,” she says. Student participation in class increased. With more interest in class, she says, students performed well on assessments, and attendance gradually improved. She shows the attendance result on screen as well.

Two of her staff speak in the video. An economics teacher says planning for differentiation “used to consume a lot of time and energy”, and describes starting a tic-tac-toe activity that “has been proved to be very effective”. A mathematics teacher says the sessions covered lesson planning and the different kinds of activities that can go into it, and adds: “I also learn how to track the students’ record more efficiently.”

I conducted many workshops for training my staff regarding the teaching strategies, tools, assessment methods, differentiation strategies which I learnt from this course.

A leadership licence next.

The course reached home as well. She found the child development theories useful enough to apply in her family life. “Now I am dealing with my children according to their stage of development,” she says, “and the impact is quite evident in their personality and behaviour.” Her next step is to apply for the leadership licence.

Vice principal again. Near family.

Harpreet had eighteen years in schools and a vice principal's record, but her husband's posting left her searching in a market where leadership vacancies are few; schools offered her a primary post or a step down to coordinator.
