Looking for
A teaching job in the UAE

Divya was looking for a teaching job in the UAE and knew she was not confident about the methods classrooms there now expect. Part way through the course she has a working grasp of lesson planning, questioning and assessment, and is waiting for a classroom to use it.

The methods she was unsure of.

Divya Sumesh recorded her account while still pursuing PgCTL. The gap she names is specific: the “new techniques and teaching methods which are currently applied in the classrooms”. During the course, she says, she got an idea of different teaching styles, methods, assessments and classroom management, and became aware of teaching theories “and how we can implement them in the classroom”. She singles out lesson planning and questioning skills, which she calls “the important aspects of teaching”, as things the course made clear to her.

Ready for a classroom.

She lists the rest plainly: providing feedback, reflection, the ethics and values of teaching, and a general awareness of the latest technologies teachers can use. She speaks of a classroom as something still to come, and of herself as a teacher who “will be ready to accept the changes”. She expects the course to help outside work too. “I think I can balance my personal and professional life in a better way in future,” she says.

Thank you, Suraasa team and mentors for giving me such guidance and for improving my knowledge and skills.

Holding out for the Gulf. And getting there.

Sonu was teaching chemistry in India and set on the Gulf, turning down interview calls at home while no route abroad appeared.
