Rania taught primary classes at an international school in the UAE, fitting PgCTL around the job. Learning to reflect during a lesson as well as after it moved her teaching from good to outstanding, and led to her demonstrating a grade one lesson to teachers across the UAE.

A lesson built on Piaget.

Rania Hassan gave her demonstration at a camp where, she says, “teachers from all over the UAE gather together to share outstanding teaching practices.” She went as a presenter. Her grade 1 lesson used Piaget’s cognitive learning theory, and showed how students’ different mental abilities affect learning in an individual. “My demonstration was a success and proved helpful to many educators from different schools,” she says.

In her own classroom, she says, the lessons she learnt to implement were “appreciated by my young students and recognised by senior management.” She calls reflective practice one of the most positive things she gained from the course, and says it resulted in better achievement of goals and student successes.

A campaign against bullying.

The programme also encouraged her to integrate ethics into her lessons. At primary level she initiated an anti-bullying campaign, highlighting with her students “the importance of unity, tolerance and respect among different nationalities.” The praise and the teaching skills gave her confidence. That, she says, has pushed her to finally pursue one of her goals: starting her own educational YouTube channel.

I have gained more confidence in my abilities as a primary educator.
